When it comes time for Holiday decorating, getting hands on my mantel is probably my favorite task! This year I decided to spruce up my traditional design collection of vines, sprays and garlands with a pop of pink! No matter what your style, whether it is rustic, modern, traditional or a glamorous look, my simple Christmas mantel ideas and techniques will help you craft the perfect mantel décor…and is sure to make the holidays sparkle and shine!
The Holidays are stressful enough; the last thing you need to worry about is how to decorate your home so that you can enjoy that once a year festive ambiance. I have some great tips to help you tackle decorating your fireplace mantel easily and stylishly!
1. Choose Your Decorative Accessories
For this particular project, I chose an arrangement of candlesticks and a 3-tier cake plate stand. Both of these objects add an element of height and sparkle to the mantel, which instantly creates a visual interest. Place them on opposite ends and leave the center space open for the greenery.
2. Add Layers
Start with a plain green Christmas garland, which acts as your first base layer. Then simply weave around the garland with your choice of decorative silk vine. You can either use plain vines for a more modern effect or spruce it up with a vine that contains pinecones, red roses, fir sprigs or cranberry beads. In this case, I wanted to add in a splash of pink so I chose a vine that came with exotic flowers from my local craft store. Always make sure to extend the vines at least 3’ beyond the end of the mantel. This technique will give your fireplace a very full and complete look and help your decorated mantle to appear larger.
3. Add the Finishing Touches
Top off your layers of greenery with a string of lights, bows, flowers or any other favorite holiday decoration. One of my favorite birds is the peasant so for this particular project, I added the stuffed bird to the top of the mantel for a personal affect. Remember that it is nearly impossible to make a mistake when it comes to decorating your own mantel. Design is a personal choice so as long as you stick to layering items that you like, you are sure to enjoy your masterpiece!
One last piece of advice, for your safety and to take precautions to prevent any holiday fires, keep all decorations a safe distance from the opening of your fireplace. I hope you’ve enjoyed my simple Christmas mantel ideas and techniques. Feel free to share yours in the comments below.
